The Australian Government is looking at ways to improve the offshore environmental management regime. Australia has a broad legislative and policy framework to manage the environmental impacts and risks of offshore petroleum and greenhouse gas storage activities.

The Department of Industry, Science and Resources is leading a review of this framework and there will be several opportunities to comment throughout the review. In the first instance, Government is seeking to clarify the consultation requirements for offshore petroleum and greenhouse gas storage activities.

Feedback is being sought on the consultation requirements under the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage (Environment) Regulations 2023. We welcome feedback from everyone with an interest in offshore petroleum and greenhouse gas storage activities, which includes:

  • offshore petroleum and greenhouse gas storage industries and peak bodies
  • Traditional Owners and First Nations people or communities
  • government agencies and regulators
  • fishing peak bodies and fishers
  • environmental groups and organisations
  • other marine users and industries
  • members of the public.

You can read the Clarifying consultation requirements for offshore oil and gas storage regulatory approvals: consultation paper and have your say on the Department’s consultation hub. Submissions close on 23 February 2024.
